Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi
Assalatu wa salamu alaika YA RASULALLAH
Dear imam, I ask you to reply this question of mine, as it is very dificult for me to have a answer by myself.
On this site there is a article with the title of ‘Hadrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib’, a biography of this great sahaba of our beloved Prophet (Salallahu Alaihi wa Salam), and the autor says that the article was based on the book ‘Hadrat Ali’ by Prof Madud-ul-Hasan.
He says upon the subtitle of ‘Opposition of the Quraysh’, coating from the book ‘Ali the Superman’ by Dr. Muhyuddin that:
Ali's knowledge, piety, bravery, generalship, services for the propagation of Islam, and his achievements on the battlefield for the defence of Islam, made him superior to the first two Caliphs. He was superbly equipped to fill the office of the Caliph, yet the entire race seems to have taken up arms against him. In spite of his qualities of mind and spirit, he seems to have been sacrificed to the prevailing tribal spirit of his countrymen. Perhaps it was his superiority more than anything else which led to his downfall. He knew himself to be superior to his contemporaries and he hated the petty tribal chiefs of the Quraysh who were interested only in their self aggrandizement. What is more, he let them know his contempt for them, and frequently acted independently of them in defiance of established custom."
And he says under the subtitle Assesment by Muslims, that
‘Ibn Athir, the great biographer held:
"Ali was the first Caliph and both of his parents were pure Hashimites. He was so judicially minded that he could not put up with the dishonesty of his relations or friends, and was so much engrossed in piety that at the time of his marriage with Fatima, he did not possess anything save a camel skin on which he fed his camels in the day, and which he converted into a bed sheet at night. The Prophet in his table talk has not extolled anyone of his Companions as much as he had Ali. Surely, Ali never spoke a lie in his lifetime."’
My question is:
IS THAT CORRECT TO AFIRM THAT HADRAT ALI (RADIALLAHU ANHU) IS SUPERIOR TO THE FIRST TWO CALIPHS?
ARE YOU NOT DENIYING THE CALIPHATE OF HAZRAT ABU BAKR SIDDIQ (Radiallahu Anhu) IF YOU SAY THAT HAZRAT ALI (Radiallahu Anhu) WAS THE FIRST CALIPH?
Note that the author of the article does not criticize the statements, so he is accepting it to be true, and the statement are general, and not referring to a particular quality.
And may I remind you that Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Rahmatullahi alaihi) wrote a fatwa who is now translated to English with the title of ‘The condemnation of RaafizeeTabarraee Shia’, where he states:
• ‘if a raafzee perceives Hazrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) superior than all companions, then he is a innovator and deviant and if he is the denier of Khilafat of Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu), then he is kafir (Fatawa Kulasa Qalami Kitabussalah)
• ‘if there is someone who says that Hazrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) is superior to three Caliphs, then he is a deviant. And if he refuses the Caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr Sidiqq (Radiallahu Anhu) and Hazrat Umar Faruq (Radiallahu Anhu), then he is a kafir’ (Fath ul-Qadir Sharh Hidaya)
• ‘the refuter of imamat of Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu) is a kafir’ (fatawa Alamgiri)
• It is in Majmaul Anhur Sharh Multaqal Abhur ‘the raafzee, if he is only tafzeeliyah (believing that Hazrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) is better than Shaikhain), then he is a Badmazhab. And if he is the denier of the Caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (Radiallahu Anhu), then he is a kafir’
You may find the whole fatwa of Imam Ahmad Raza in www.alahazratnetwork.org, where are many arguments about the issue.
Now please, answer the 2 questions having in mind the fatwa of Imam Raza Khan, because the Imam is saying that whoever says that Hazrat Ali is superior to the first 2 caliphs is a badmazhabi, and is clearly written in the article of your site that Hazrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) is superior to the first 2 caliphs! Is Imam Ahmad Raza (Radiallahu Anhu) wrong? Or is the author wrong? If the author is wrong is not correct to have such claiming in are article of a site of sunnis.
Similarly, if you say that Hazrat Ali was the first caliph, so who what was Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu)? And Imam Ahmad Raza (Radiallahu Anhu) said that whoever denies the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu) is a kafir.
May Allah (Azza wa Jal) help you giving the correct answer. AMIN
