Assalamu alaikum,
A question has come up on the sister's board, and has sparked a lot of interest.
The question is:
is it true that ur husband in this world will be ur husband in the hereafter?
And as the husbands have a choice of hoors (angels), do women also have this choice?
JazakAllah khair, we look forward to the answer!

Allah, Most Glorious and Sublime we Praise, and Infinite Blessings and Peace upon His Beloved and Noble Messenger, Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam.
Before answering the specific question it is very important to first understand the nature of Paradise, its joys and delights and its inhabitants.
Allah, with His name I begin; The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful.
The final and permanent abode of divine grace where the righteous Muslims (male and female) will dwell is given many names, the most recurrent of which in the Noble Quran is Jannah (pl. Jinaan); garden, paradise; also, Dar al-Salaam; the Home of Peace/Security.
Jannah is the dwelling for those who have faith in Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, and accomplish good deeds, those who devote themselves to Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, and worship Him with sincerity. It is a place for those who fear their Lord and fulfil their promise to Him, and those who struggle in the cause of Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, with their possessions and lives. It is a home for the pious worshippers who prostrate themselves to Allah in Salah observing utmost humility, servitude and submission and who instruct others to do good and forbid them from evil. To such believers and worshippers, Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, assures them of endless bliss that is awaiting them in the Hereafter, to strengthen their determination in conducting good pious deeds and to be more grateful in life.
Jannah and the nature of Jannah life are both physical and spiritual. It is a place of absolute perfection and endless joy and happiness, where nothing is lacking and nothing can interfere or influence its purity and impeccability. Our physical limitations and materialistic minds cannot comprehend or grasp the greatness of the blessings prepared and already existing in Jannah.
I have prepared for My righteous slaves that which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and has never crossed the mind of any human being. Then, the Messenger, Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam, said: Recite if you wish,
No soul knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do.
(Al-Quran: 32:17)
Hadith Qudsi; The Sacred words of Allah, Most Glorious & Majestic, narrated by the Messenger, Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam. Fath al-Bari, Vol: 6:318, the famous commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, by Imam Allama Shaykh al-Islam, Imam Hafiz al-Hadith, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, (B773H-D852H). and Imam Hafiz al-Hadith, Yahya ibn Sharaf, Abu Zakariyya, Muhyi al-Din al-Nawawi, (B631H-D676H), in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, 17:166.
The joys of Jannah are far greater than the pleasures of this world, which pale into great insignificance in comparison.
Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, (B194H D256H), reports from Sahl ibn Sad as-Saidee, (Allah be well pleased with him), that the Messenger, (Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam), said:
An area the size of a whip in Jannah is better than this world and all that is in it.
Fath al-Baari bi Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol: 6:319, and Imam Hafiz al-Hadith, Yahya ibn Sharaf, Abu Zakariyya, Muhyi al-Din al-Nawawi, (B631H-D676H), in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, 17:166.
The joys and rewards are equally for the believing men and women, as Allah, Most Majestic and Sublime, says:
Allah has promised to believers men and women – Gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein [forever], and beautiful mansions in Gardens of everlasting bliss. But, the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah. That is the supreme success.
(Al-Quran 9:72)
Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj ibn Muslim, al-Naysaburi, (B204H D261H), relates the following two Hadith:
Abu Hurayrah, (Allah be well pleased with him), reported that the Prophet, (Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam), said:
Whoever enters Jannah is blessed with a life of joy; he will never feel miserable, his clothes will never wear out and his youth will never fade away.
And listen to the Divine call that will be addressed to the people of Jannah after they enter:
I grant for you that you will be healthy and never fall sick; you will live and never die; you will be young and never grow old; you will be joyful and never feel miserable.
Similarly, Allah, (Most Glorious and Majestic) says in the Quran:
And they shall hear the cry: Behold the Garden before you! You have been made its inheritors, for your [righteous] deeds.
(Al-Quran 7:43)
The delights of Jannah surpass the imagination and defy description. It is like nothing known to us in this world or ever will be known till the end of this world. Jannah will have: Sparkling light, aromatic plants, a lofty palace, a flowing river, ripe fruit, a beautiful wife and abundant clothing, an eternal abode of radiant joy, in beautiful, soundly-constructed high houses.

Re: Partners in Paradise (contd)
The people of Jannah will enter Jannah in the most perfect and beautiful form, in the image of their father Sayyidina Adam, alayhi al-Salam. Their external appearance will be in harmony, and their hearts will be as one. Their hearts and souls will be clean and pure.
Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad bin Hanbal, al-Shaybani, (B164H-D241H), in his Musnad and Imam Muhammad ibn, Isaa, al-Sulami, al-Tirmidhi, (B209H-D279H), in his Sunan, reported from Muadh ibn Jabal, that the Messenger of Allah, (Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam), said:
The people of Jannah will enter hairless, looking as if their eyes are ringed with kohl, inhabitants of (aged) thirty-three.
Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, (B194H D256H) and Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj ibn Muslim, al-Naysaburi, (B204H D261H), narrate a Hadith reported by Abu Hurayrah, (Allah be well pleased with him), that the People of Jannah;
Will not spit, blow their noses or excrete.
Also, it is reported that the People of Jannah will not sleep.
Sleep is the brother of death; the people of Jannah will not sleep.
Reported by Jabir ibn Abdullah and Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa, Allah be well pleased with them all.
[Al-Kamil by ibn Adiyy, Al-Hilyah al-Awliya by Imam, Hafiz al-Hadith, Ahmad, Abu Nuaym al-Asbahani, (B336H-D430H) and Tarikh Isbahan by Abush-Shaykh.]
The mutâa; pleasures of this world are tangible and present, here and now, whilst the delights of Jannah are as yet from the ghayb; unseen and promised. People are easily influenced by what they can actually see and know instantly. It is hard though on their hearts to leave something that is in front of them for the sake of something else in the future; so how much more difficult if the promise is for something that they will acquire after death! Hence, Allah, the Most Wise and Sublime, draws a comparison with the pleasures of the Dunya and that of the joys/delights of Jannah, and explained and illustrated that the joys/delights of Jannah are far more superior to the pleasures of this Dunya.
Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, said:
And strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have granted them for enjoyment [the disbelievers], the splendour of this life that We may test them thereby. But the provision [good reward in Akhirah] of your Lord is better and ever lasting.
(Al-Quran 20:131)
The comparison between the women of Jannah (referring to the Muslim women inheriting Jannah) and the women of the dunya serves to demonstrate the superiority of that which is in Jannah.
Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, (B194H D256H), reported from Anas, (May Allah be well pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah, (Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam), said:
If a woman from the people of Jannah was to look at this earth, she would light up everything in between and fill it with her fragrance; the veil on her head is better than this world and all that is in it.
Eating and drinking in the dunya; results in the need for excretion and its associated unpleasant odours. If a person drinks wine in this world, he loses his mind. Women in this dunya menstruate and give birth, which are sources of pain and hurt. Jannah is free and pure from all such discomforts and tribulations: its inhabitants will not urinate, defecate, spit or suffer from catarrh.
The wine of Jannah is crystal-white, delicious to those who drink and free from intoxication! The water of Jannah does not become brackish, and its milk never changes in taste. The women of Jannah are pure and free from menstruation, nifas; postnatal bleeding, and all other impurities suffered by women in this world. The hearts of the inhabitants of Jannah will be pure, their speech will be good, their deeds righteous. There will be no hurtful, upsetting, offensive or provocative talk there; for Jannah is free from all sin and worthless words and deeds. The only speech spoken is good, of truth only, sincere and pure, free from all shameful and sinful earthly speech.
When the inhabitants of Jannah have been saved from the fire of hell, they will be detained on a bridge between Jannah and Jahannam; Hell, where they will be purified by settling any wrong doings that may be outstanding between any of them, so that they may enter Jannah pure of heart and soul, void and cleansed from any resentment, envy or other negative thoughts or emotions of this dunya.
Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, (B194H D256H), and Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj ibn Muslim, al-Naysaburi, (B204H D261H), report that when the inhabitants of Jannah enter Jannah;
There will be no hatred or resentment among them, their hearts will be as one, and they will glorify Allah morning and evening.
Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, calls the pleasures of the dunya temporary convenience because they are enjoyed only for a short time, but the joys of the Akhirah; Hereafter, have no end. Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, illustrates a clear example of the reality of this world and how quickly it will pass away:

Re: Partners in Paradise
And put forward for them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water [rain] which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But [later] it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is able to do everything. Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds that last are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.
(Al-Quran 18:45-46)
And speaking of the delights in Jannah, Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, said:
There will be there all that the souls could desire, all that the eyes could delight in.
(Al-Quran 43:71)
One might ask: where will the waste products from their food and drink go? This question was put to the Prophet, Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam, by his dear Sahabah; Companions, and he (Salla Allahu alayhi wa Sallam), replied that part of these waste products will be turned into musk fragrant perspiration/sweat or come out as musk scented burps from their bodies.
(Sahih Bukhari)
Imam Mufassir, Muhammad ibn Ahmad Abu Abdullah al-Ansari, al-Qurtubi, (Birth date unknown D671H), in his popular book At-Tadhkirah, answers and explains the reason for the specific luxuries/delights of Jannah:
The luxuries and clothing of the inhabitants of Jannah will not be for the purpose of warding off potential pains; they will not eat because of hunger, or drink due to thirst, or use perfume because of some offensive odour. Jannah is an everlasting succession of delight and joy.
The wisdom behind it (food and drink, etc.) is that Allah, (Most Glorious and Majestic), will introduce Jannah to them in ways similar to the good things that they enjoyed on earth, but He will increase it in ways known only to Him.
[Continued - See below]
The last wife of the believer in this world will be his wife in the Hereafter if she is righteous.
"Gardens of 'Adn [Eden], which they shall enter and (also) those who act righteously from among their fathers and their wives and their offspring ..." Al - Qur'an 13:23
Also,
"Enter Jannah, you and your wives in happiness." Al Qur'an 43:70
In Tarikh al-Raqqah, Abu 'Ali al-Harrani reported from Maymun ibn Mahran that:
"Mu'awiyah ibn 'Ali Sufyan, (Allah be well pleased with them all), proposed to Umm al-Darda' to marry him but she refused, saying, 'I heard Abu al-Darda' say that the Messenger of Allah, (Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam), said, "A woman will be with the last of her husbands."
Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, also says in the Qur'an that He will marry the believers (inhabitants) of Jannah to beautiful women who were not their wives in this world:
"So [it will be], and We shall marry them to Hur's with wide lovely eyes." Al Qur'an 44:54
Al - Hur is the plural of Hura, which is a woman, the white parts of her eyes are intensely white and the black part is intensely black. Al-'ayn is the plural of 'ayna. The 'ayna is used for the woman whose eyes are wide. The Hur al-'ayn will be of equal age. They are also described as being young and virgin girls.
"Verily, We have created [their companions] of special creation and made them virgin - pure [and undefiled], beloved [by nature], equal in age." Al Qur'an 56:35-37
The reason for mentioning that they are virgins is to carry the meaning that they are specially created by Allah, untouched by anyone as a special reward from the Mercy of Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic.
The Al-Hur are also described by Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, as restraining their gaze upon their husbands only; not wandering on other men.
The righteous women entering Jannah will be free of hayd; menstruation, nifas; postnatal bleeding, spittle mucus, urine and stools.
However, the greatest joy and delight in Jannah will be to gaze upon the Countenance of Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, in gardens of delight.
Ibn al-Athir said:
"Seeing Allah, (Most Glorious and Majestic), is the ultimate joy in the Hereafter, the most precious gift of Allah, (Most Glorious and Majestic)." May Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, help us reach that goal.
In this world when a man marries twice or even often between a married couple there are tribulations with each and every act. This world is Dar al-Taklif; an abode of duties, burdens and responsibilities. Some couples occasionally experience problems in their marriage in their relationship such as jealousy, envy, etc, which sometimes leads to enmity, gossip, backbiting, distrust, dishonesty, insincerity, leading to the breakdown of love and mutual respect. It creates spiritual and mental imbalances. These are all human weaknesses associated with this world only. As you have read above, when the fortunate righteous believers, men and women enter Jannah they will be cleansed and purified from all such diseases.
In Jannah all righteous men and women will be equal in beauty and piety. Everyone will co-habit in peace and harmony. It is a place of perfect harmony and security. A place where all righteous men and women will have pure thoughts and hearts. No one will have negative thoughts or emotions, simply because Jannah and its inhabitants is and will be of impeccable perfection.
So yes! Your last husband in this world will be your husband in Jannah. Unmarried or divorced women will choose unmarried men from this world. The wives of this world will be more beautifull than the Hurs. Women of this world will have Gilman; male servants for their service. The Hurs granted and promised to men are amongst the Merciful promises of Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, not from the choice of men.
The wives of this world will not feel jealous of the Hur wives. There will be absolute harmony and perfection.
Conclusion:
The purpose of quoting all of the above references and lengthening the reply is to thoroughly establish the whole conceptual nature of Jannah. Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, draws a comparison with certain material/physical worldly pleasures which mankind desires and strives for.
This world is not ideally made for seeking isolation, withdrawal or living upon the mountains or in the wilderness. No! Muslims may enjoy the pleasures of this world as long as we do not transgress the boundaries set by Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, our Creator.
Hence, we see that Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, speaks of unique trees, rivers, mansions, special couches, emaralds, rubies, honey, milk, beauty and wives, etc, drawing comparisons with tangible worldly experiences of luxuries, pleasures, joys and desires.
However, at the same time He also makes it clear that the reality of the delights & joy in Jannah are far more superior, unimaginable and incomprehensible to mankind. Jannah is from the "ghayb" the reality of which we cannot comprehend since we have never experienced that which is beyond our human faculties.
Jannah is Haq; True and so are its details as mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Whatever bounties, joys & delights prepared and promised by Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, they are all from His sheer Kindness & Mercy. There is nothing we do which He, Most Glorious and Majestic, is in need of. His promises to reward are there to inspire us weak humans to do good deeds and counter the evil temptations & tribulations of this world.
Only Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, knows the very true nature of the joys & delights of Jannah which He has prepared. The ultimate reward & greatest form of joy and delight in Jannah will be the gazing at the Divine Countenance of Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic.
When woman hear or read about the Hur's of Jannah, it is natural for them in this world to feel insecure, since this world carries such tribulations and insecurities. One can be insecure for reasons of fear of loosing someone they hold dear and love. Everyone knows this world is temporal and everyone and everything is bound by time. So many women fear to loose their security and friendship which they build & develop through many years of mutual partnership which a man gives a woman & their offspring.
Insecurities and jealousies also stem from women feeling insecure of their own beauty. This is not so in Jannah. For, all the women will be of equal beauty. When some men see women of more apparent physical beauty there is a attraction because of the tribulation which Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, has placed with it. When women of Jannah are equal in beauty then there is no question of tribulation.
In this world we all seek a life of comfort. Many people think of themselves first before the need of others. Jannah is free from such imperfections and jealous motives or thoughts. The wives of Jannah will not need to be insecure or jealous. There is no tribulation in Jannah.
Indeed, Allah, Most Glorious and Majestic, is All-Knowing of His Creation, their needs and the Joys & Delights He has already prepared for His believing & Obedient slaves.
