Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem.
Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.
Thank you for the question that you have posed.
First of all it must be noted that all those places in which children study the knowledge of Islam, and have to pay for expenses like accomodation, living expenses, fees etc. then these sort of institutes which are regularly found in the subcontinent, and are known as 'dar-ul-'ulums', then zakah can be given to these places.
The second issue is that it is perfectly pemissable (ja'iz) to give zakah in currency i.e. paper money, as this can be transferred to buy clothes, wheat, barley, sugar, oats, etc. It is not haraam, as anything that is Haraam will be specified by the Qur'an or the Sunnah.
Similarly gold can also be given as zakah, as this can also be transferred, and then used for whatever purpose it may serve, for example, the similar examples that are given above. However gold is zakatable in itself also, just as any currency would be.
I hope this short answer suffices for the question that you have asked, and may Allah the Almighty give you blessing in your Din, Imaan, wealth, home and work.
Wallahu A'lamu Biththawaab.
M. Waseem Ashrafi.
