Salaam, looks like certain Mosques will be one day ahead of the rest of us, as it stands MAMission have not announced or confirmed any sighting news. May i ask did any of the Manchester observers, have binoculars or photograhic equipment ? I am not doubting, i only wish we were all united on this.
Dr Manzoor Ahmed is a leading authority on astronomy & moonsighting and has liased with Muhaddith e Azam Mission in previous years.
It will be visible in most of the world on October 15. However, in Northern Europe and in England, it may not be seen even on October 15, although it is going to be 38 hours old, because it is in the Southern Hemisphere. It is going to be less than 3 degrees above horizon at sunset in England on Oct 15 and the glow of sunlight even after sunset will make it very difficult to see.
Accordingly, the first day of Ramadan will be on Saturday, October 16, 2004 for most of the world except Northern Europe and Northern Asia. England is in a situation that this moon may or may not be seen on October 15.

Last night the Imam of the mosque explained that 7 people (not 14 and not Imam Mishbahi have previously thought) had gone to look for the moon, fully expecting not to see it as everyone believed it was not possible. However, when they got there all 7 witnessed the new moon with the naked eye. They then returned to the mosque and gave shahadat.
Of the 7, 6 were 5 time namazees in the mosque, with beard and emt the standards of a witness. The mosque then had a meeting and thier ijtihad was to begin ramdhan. This ijtihad is binding only on the followers of the mosque. Some other sunni mosques followed suit believing the witnesees, others did not. If the moon is sighted in one place it does not mean that the next place must also begin ramdhan. The mosque is not following the wahabis etc, it has done a valid ijtihad.
Allah Ta'ala knows best.

It has been stated that if the moon has been seen with the naked eye, then fast must be observed by those people. However people in other areas of the north of England have had no sightings.
I dont know the full situation but it seems about 30% of Sunnis in U.K are fasting today and will be praying their second Taraveeh.
Togetherness of Ramadan is'nt as easy as people think as there are more than 5 times as many Sunni Mosques than there were in the 80's. As well as more Muslims, maybe some people are getting involved in the decision making and influencing others than should be ?

I've heard that this alleged sighting of the moon is not very credible and that is why the majority of Sunni Mosques did not accept the sighting as valid - The Met experts stated that it would be impossible to see the new moon yesterday as it was barely a few hours old and therefore not visible to the naked eye.
