The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, repeated Monday its opposition to link Islam with terrorist acts.
"We are not using the term Islam terrorism or Muslim terrorism. We are not using that word," Commission spokesman for justice and security affairs, Friso Roscam Abbing, told reporters in Brussels.
He noted that the Commission last week adopted a document on a EU strategy to fight terrorism in which it underlined that it is necessary "not to fall in the sphere of Islamophobia and not to confuse Islam with terrorism."
However, the EU spokesman noted that the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam poses a threat to Europe.
"Of the current terrorist threats, it is in particular the unacceptable fundamentalist interpretation of Islam which constitutes the main if not the only terrorist threat at this moment," he said.
Abbing said Franco Frattini, the EU Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security, is participating in the presentation of a reportedly anti-Islam book in his capacity as a Commissioner.
Frattini, an ex-Italian foreign minister, is taking part in a debate in Rome Monday on a book by Carlo Panella titled "Il complotto ebraico - L'antisemitismo islamico da Mametto a Bin Laden" (The Jewish plot - Islamic anti-Semitism from Mohammad till Bin Laden).
The spokesman said the Commissioner during the debate is expected to refer to the Commission's proposal on how to prevent radicalization of young Muslims living in Europe.
He said Frattini is engaged in preparing an inter-faith conference to be held in early 2006 which will look at Islamophobia and anti-Semitism in Europe.
Asked what measures the EU is taking to stop Europeans from inciting against Islam like the book to be presented in Rome, he said the Commission cannot pass legislation in this regard but recommended EU member states to promote mutual respect and inter-cultural dialogue in their integration and asylum policies.
