Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
I was shocked when I read that lactose is obtained from whey. I mean lactose is milksugar so I thought: ‘Nothing wrong, its JUST milksugar.’ But if we study how lactose is isolated from milk we conclude that lactose is obtained from whey!
Whey is a by-product of cheese making_It is the liquid portion of milk when milk is coagulated_Milk is coagulated by RENNET!!_Rennet is an extract of the stomach of slaughtered calves. So if sth haraam (rennet) comes into contact with milk, the milk becomes impure. And if lactose is obtained from whey, derived from impure milk, lactose is haraam. And not to mention that when whey is seperated from the rest of the now coagulated milk, little rennet can come along with the whey and thus lactose can have a very very little amount of rennet.
Vegans and a minority of vegetarians do not consume dairy products at all. I Googled around for a while to find out whether the majority of vegetarians consume lactose. I couldn’t find what I was looking for but whether they do consume it or not, vegatarians do not consider milk to become impure when sth haraam comes into contact with milk… but we Muslims do!
The Food Industry nowadays is now so advanced that we have to look very careful how an ingredient is isolated from it’s source.
So how about sugars/sweeteners like Fructose, Maltose an Saccharine?
Fructose: sweetener obtained from sugar or sucrose.
Maltose: one of the parts of starch.
Saccharine: a non-nutritive synthetic sweetener.
These 3 are halaal, alhamdulillah. Isolated from their source in a halaal way.
We have to watch out from especially dairy products, chocolate, chocolate paste/spread and other products which contain lactose.
May Allah forgive us and may Allah give us knowlegde.
Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
Wassalaam
