i know many muslims who have bought houses on mortgages, how else can they get on the housing ladder, and as far as i know most ulama approve of it.

I agree for alot of people it would be very dificult to buy a house without taking out a loan or mortgage, especially with the house prices going up. i dont think the halal mortgages are very halal either because the still charge intrest but jst a lower rate. best to ask the imam.

I know this post is quite old but i would like to re open the debate I think we need a clear opinion of a prominent scholar as i have read verdicts by Ulema that there is a hadith of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) pbuh "No Riba (interest) (exists) between a Muslim and a Harbi Kaafir in Darul Harb." (muslim sharif) I think according to Fiqh the hanafi scholars have the opinion that if muslim living in foreign lands do not take interest yet have to pay in in daily life in all sorts of shapes and form then the muslims are disadvantaged.
Although i have read the opinions of other scholars including hanafi "deobandi" and they say its total haraam
I have also read opinion of scholars who agree with the above hadith but their deffinition of darul harb is land of war, and Uk is not land of war as we are freely alowed to pray, build mosques, have religios activities etc
so in effect a very complex issue but what about the normal muslim person who is just trying to build a family a home and yet is constantly fighting with his/her concience that am i commiting haraam by having a mortgage or not.
If we have any ulema or scholars or people who have connections with scholars lets have a clear opinion on it.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Brother its perfectly permisible to buy a house on a mortgage in a non muslim land, providing you have no other means to acquire a property for your family.
I have yet to hear of a sunni scholar go against this judgement.

Ala Hazrat Azeem ul Barkat has also stated in thier fatwa that it is jaiz, also a fatwa from Mufti Akhtar raza Khan has said its allowed. and the hadith to support is " no intrest between a muslim and a harbi kafir"
